Last Saturday, December 3rd, the Hexagon Dance Collective premiered as a rising company in Los Angeles and the world. Made up of six women, the company presented its first show in the art gallery of Loyola Marymount University. Unique in its collaborative choreography created by each of the members, the Hexagon Dance Collective approaches a new stage of the dance world in an age when classical concert dance is struggling.

Although the venue was not optimal for the performance - the seating was limited and prevented full view of the floorwork - it was laced with meaning for the performers. All six women met as freshmen at LMU and founded their company on work created for productions during their study.

I was so honored to be involved in this show as a freshman dance major. On Friday morning, I helped prepare the floor, rolling out and taping down the marley dance flooring for the show. Later, while watching, I marveled at the lighting and the expanse of the space; the art gallery truly transformed into a performance space.

Throughout the performance, I admired the simplicity and professionalism of the dancers and their choreography. Simple costuming allowed for the focus to remain on the choreography. The use of gestures and the eclectice choice of synthesized music echoed as a theme throughout the performance.

I love collaboration, however difficult it may be, and thus, I admired the work ethic of these dancers. As a budding choreographer myself, I know how difficult it is to work with one other person to create a work, and these six women work together on each piece. Every dancer was equally featured, and all the dancers possessed an equal level of ability. Amidst their individual style, they cultivated a fusion of creativity that manifested in unitive choreography. I cannot wait to see where this company will go next.
